SABC COMMISSIONED RESEARCH PROJECTS

ECD Radio Programmes (Pilot)
New Age Research Consultancy (Pty) Ltd, May 1997

This research identifies the factors, which affect the level of engagement of the target audience with the programmes. For example, factors, which stimulate the listeners engagement and capture their attention were found to be
•    short programmes (maximum of 8-10 minutes in length) with the key stimuli being no more than 2-3 minutes in length
•    children’s voices in the programme
•    music.
However, the research did not deal with the question of what was learnt when the children were engaged with the programme.

Learn ‘n Live Game Show (pilot)
New Age Research Consultancy (Pty) Ltd, September 1997

This research suggests that the participants in the game show get a great deal out of it:
•    participants solved problems creatively and engaged in lateral thinking
•    their general knowledge was increased;
•    their confidence increased; and
•    They gained experience of thinking quickly.

Both of these seem to be real learning gains. However, the research suggests that the benefits for the viewers of the game show were quite different. It would seem that the viewers engaged actively with some aspects of the show, urging on participants and directing them to do various things. Some viewers offered answers to the questions asked.

On balance, then, it would seem that while the game show participants learnt some things, the viewers merely got excited. The result could be very different if the programme were well mediated by an educator.

Dumani Programme Assessment
Social Surveys, March 1997

Overall, the research points to uneven engagement of the viewers with the programmes and identifies the following factors in this regard:
•    Different levels of media literacy among the target audiences
•    Different language needs
•    Inappropriate story-lines within the programme
•    Confusing situations within segments.
