Military education
What contribution can distance education make in military and other forms of government education and training?

For countries with large and dispersed armed forces, meeting the needs of military personnel for education and training can be difficult and expensive. Military personnel need continual training:

  • To meet new and changing technical requirements in their jobs
  • To undertake greater responsibility
  • To prepare to return to civilian life
  • To meet special national requirements (such as bilingual training in the Canadian armed forces).

Distance education can assist governments in providing this kind of education and training with minimum disruption when, for example, military personnel are posted to a new location.

Distance education can also help ensure continuity in national prison systems, for example, where moves from location to location (known in Canada as "cascading through the system") or release at the end of a term can disrupt conventionally delivered education and training.
