Several kinds of on-line services play an important part in distance education,
including subject-related databases and library services, on-line access to information
about courses, and links to administrative services such as registration and fee payment.
In some countries, most notably France, people have had access for many years to public
videotext services over terminals provided by the public telephone company, including
on-line services in distance education and training programs. Increasingly, however,
personal computers with Web browsers have become the most common mode for accessing
on-line services.
