Special supplements or regular items in national newspapers—sometimes in conjunction with radio and other mass media—have often been used in large-scale distance education programs in such subjects as health care and rural development or in national in-service teacher training programs. Using newspaper distribution networks is often the most cost-effective way of getting educational material to large numbers of readers. Newspapers are also used as a vehicle for communication and contact between and among students, course developers, tutors, and instructors, and in-house student newspapers are sometimes used to provide general information on an institution's courses.
