Most school and college textbooks are written for classroom use and thus may not be
appropriate for a distance education course. The exceptions are textbooks written in a
personal style that include self-assessment questions, and review tests or questions at
the end of each main section or chapter. For the distance learner, many standard textbooks
would need to be complemented by a study guide or course guide with commentary and notes.
Some on-line courses based on a "wrap-around" model use standard textbooks or
course readers (edited compilations of articles) as a basic resource, giving on-line
guidance on which sections, chapters, or articles to read for later discussion through the
conferencing system.
