Videotape can be used to record broadcasts for later review. But the technology's
optimal use is for programs and sequences designed for more flexible, active use in
conjunction with other course components (as with audiotapes) or for group viewing and
discussion with a tutor or animateur (as in the tutored video instruction method used for
some courses at Stanford University in the United States). As with broadcast TV,
videotapes can be very useful for showing processes, experiments, field locations, and
case studies. But learners must have access, at home or in a local center, to playback
equipment (a videocassette recorder and monitor) that it is compatible with the standard
used in the original recording (NTSC, PAL, or SECAM).
