Teaching and Learning Learner Support
Who provides learner support?
Distance learners often abandon a course of study for reasons that have nothing to do with the course itself. Instead, the problem may be dealing with the institution's administration on such matters as payment of fees. Thus it is worthwhile for a distance education institution to employ representatives to counsel students with such nonacademic problems.

Small programs may require the distance teacher to provide counseling, while single- and dual-mode institutions are likely to employ specialists in this role.

Some institutions give students a toll-free telephone number to call when they need help. Others employ a small number of counselors who work out of a central office and specialize in such areas as studying with disabilities, career development, and development of study skills, as well as a larger number of part-time, general counselors who live nearby and can be contacted by the students.Counselors may hold face-to-face group meetings or sessions with individuals during critical periods, such as before enrollment or before examinations.
