NADEOSA PROJECTS
rd_bds.gif (1931 bytes)

A central part of the work of NADEOSA is to initiate identified projects which will benefit members, as well as making a contribution to improving the quality of distance education provision and to the successful transformation of the South African education and training system as a whole. NADEOSA is currently engaged in various projects, with a focus on improving the provision of distance education in South Africa. This page contains further information on the following projects (note that information on completed projects can be located through the projects archive page):
1. Communication for Open and Distance Learning

The aim of this research project is to examine the status of the use of postal and telecommunications media and technologies for open and distance education in South Africa institutions. Based on the findings of this research, it will then seek to extract aggregated trends and requirements for distance and open learning. Finally, it will make recommendations on policies and strategies to enhance the role of these media and technologies in order to enable open and distance education to flourish in South Africa.

Of related interest is the green paper on postal policy for South Africa, which can be viewed at http://www.polity.org.za/govdocs/green_papers/post.html.

2. NADEOSA Representation on National Bodies

NADEOSA is increasingly being called upon to represent distance education in different national forums. We currently have represantation on the following national bodies. Updates on NADEOSA's activities on these bodies will be provided via the newsletters and information update services.
3. The Role of Learning Centres in Distance Education

Various strands of governmental and non-governmental policy thinking converge on the potential of community learning centres (CLCs) to, among other functions, improve the access of learners to distance education provision, and at the same time to enhance the quality of such provision. Such thinking is driven consistently by the broader need to address imbalances and inequities created by apartheid policies. There is, however, a wide range of conceptualisations, which are characterised by significant tensions, in terms of the nature, structure and possible functions of CLCs. A research and planning project is therefore proposed, in order to lay a sound basis for the construction of a network of distance learner support facilities. The Executive Committee of NADEOSA will take responsibility for overseeing the project, for which NADEOSA members will be invited to tender.

Completed Projects

1. Establishing NADEOSA's Secretariat

One of the first responsibilities for the initial NADEOSA Steering Committee was to establish a secretarial service to ensure that the Association could run effectively. This web site is one of the results of that process.
